Microsoft has provided Skype with an update on Friday that allows users to make video calls with contacts who use the Lync chat system. In addition, the program has a new, optional interface based on feedback.

Microsoft has been working for some time on integrating Skype and Lync, a service that is mainly used by companies for communication in the office, for example. Earlier, the software giant had users of both programs call each other. Adding video calling to the list of functionality is a further step in the integration, according to Microsoft.

The support for video calling between the two programs has been in the pipeline for some time, because Microsoft has been trying to combine the forces of Skype and Lync for some time. Combining the possibilities goes so far that the name of Lync is also being overhauled; the program will be called Skype for Business from early next year.

Microsoft also announced on Friday that the design of Skype has been overhauled. The reason was criticism due to a redesign in October. “We’ve now added a compact view for those who want to see more contacts and chats in one screen. We’ve also added a toggle for unread messages,” the company said.
