SK Hynix introduces economical and compact 8GB lpddr4x modules
SK Hynix has presented new economical mobile dram. The memory manufacturer claims to have made its 8GB module smaller than the current lpddr4 packages. In addition to smartphones and tablets, SK Hynix expects application in laptops and cars.
The lpddr4x operates at a voltage of 0.6V against 1.1V for regular lpddr4. Not only is the dram more economical, but the manufacturer has also reduced the modules. The dimensions are 12mmx12.7mm, which is 30 percent smaller than current lpddr4 packages of 8GB. The thickness is less than a millimeter.
Last week, Asus announced a ZenFone smartphone with 8GB with the claim that it was the first device with this dram amount, but it is not known whether it was the memory of SK Hynix. SK Hynix announces that it expects its 8GB lpddr4x not only to end up in smartphones and tablets, but also in high-end laptops and cars.
The company also cites research by IHS, which would show that a majority of high-end smartphones will receive 8GB this year. This year the average would be 3.5GB and by 2020 that would increase to 6.9GB.
