SK Hynix expects first video card with gddr6 memory in early 2018

SK Hynix has ready 8Gbit chips of gddr6-dram. The Korean memory manufacturer plans to mass-produce the memory for “a customer” who will use the chips for a video card release in early 2018.

The company’s gddr6 dram offers a throughput of 16Gbit/s per pin. Currently gddr5x is the fastest gddr standard, with throughputs from 10 to 14Gbit/s, although this could be stretched to 16Gbit/s per pin.

According to SK Hynix, the gddr6 memory in combination with a 384bit interface can process up to 768GB per second. According to SK Hynix, gddr6 is twice as fast as gddr5, while consumption is said to be 10 percent lower. The standards organization Jedec is currently working on standardization of gddr6.

Not only SK Hynix is ​​working on gddr6. Samsung and Micron are also focusing on the new generation of video memory. Samsung expects to bring the successor to gddr5 from 2018 on the market. The speed will initially be 14Gbit/s and later increase to 16Gbit/s.
