Taiwanese memory manufacturer Silicon Power has expanded its portfolio of solid state drives with the Velox V20 series. The SSDs are available in four capacities and have a SandForce flash memory controller on board.

Silicon Power does not mention the model number of the SandForce controller, but only refers to the ‘latest generation’ controllers. It is therefore not known whether the Velox V20series has an SF1200 controller on board, but that is likely. The sequential read and write speeds of 285 and 275MB/s respectively indicate an SF1200 controller, just like the SATA-300 interface. The 2.5″ drives can also be installed in larger drive bays using an included 3.5″ bracket.

The drives are available in 40, 60, 120 and 240GB capacities, but it is unknown whether 25nm or 34nm chips will be used. The Volex V20 series has a three-year warranty, signifying Silicon Power’s confidence in trim, garbage collection and wear leveling for the MLC memory. Silicon Power did not specify throughput speeds of the various capacities, but the SF1200 controller should also be able to drive the smaller drives at the stated maximum speeds. When the drives will appear on the market and what the prices will be, Silicon Power has not yet announced.
