Signal warns of delayed verification codes due to large increase in users
The encrypted chat app Signal warns users that it may take longer to receive their verification codes. It is a sign of growing popularity for the encrypted application.
Signal warned users on Twitter, although the problems have now largely been resolved. The developers say in the tweet that verification codes will be delayed. These are SMS codes that are sent when users log in for the first time, or when a user registers their account on a new device. The codes are delayed by some carriers. Signal says it is working with those providers on a solution.
The delay is due to the large number of new users registering for the service, according to Signal. An explanation for the new growth is not given, but it probably has to do with the developments surrounding WhatsApp.
Of these, users worldwide must accept new terms and conditions that allow more data to be shared with parent company Facebook. Little will change for European users. Despite this, probably many users are looking for an alternative. Signal, like WhatsApp, uses end-to-end encryption, but it’s made by a foundation that thrives on donations.
