Sigma announces bright 14 mm ultra-wide angle and 135 mm telephoto lens
Sigma has announced four new lenses for SLRs, including the brightest 14mm wide-angle lens to date, with an f/1.8 aperture. There will also be a 135mm f/1.8, a 24-70mm f/2.8 with image stabilization and a 100-400mm telephoto zoom.
The 14 mm f/1.8, 135 mm f/1.8 and the 24-70 mm f/2.8 are given a place in the Art series, in which Sigma groups its best lenses. The 14mm lens has a front lens element with a diameter of 80mm. Although it is a convex lens element, it is not a fisheye lens. Due to the dimensions of the lens element, it is not possible to use threaded filters. The minimum focusing distance is 27cm, measured from the sensor plane, and the diaphragm consists of nine blades. The bright ultra-wide-angle lens weighs 1170 grams, has a diameter of 95 mm and is 126 mm long.
It is the first 14mm lens with an aperture of f/1.8. Comparable 14mm lenses from other manufacturers often have a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The combination of a wide angle of view and large aperture opening is especially popular in astrophotography. Sigma previously released a 20 mm f/1.4. That lens has a smaller field of view, but is even brighter.
Sigma also presents a 135mm f/1.8 lens. This bright telephoto lens weighs 1130 grams, is 115 mm long and has a diameter of 91 mm. The filter thread is 82mm and the housing is sealed against dust and moisture. You can focus from 88cm and the diaphragm also has nine blades. The third new lens in the Art series is the 24-70 mm f/2.8 with OS image stabilization. The weight of the zoom lens, which has a diameter of 88mm and a length of 108mm, has not yet been announced. The housing extends when zooming. The filter wire has a diameter of 82mm.
Finally, Sigma announces the arrival of the 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM. This telephoto zoom will have a place in the Contemporary series, which is positioned below the Art series. The zoom lens has a push-pull mechanism, but you can also zoom in and out by rotating the housing. When retracted, the zoom lens is 182 mm long, the diameter is 86 mm and there is a filter thread of 67 mm. The lens has OS image stabilization and weighs 1160 grams.
The four autofocus lenses are suitable for cameras with a full-frame sensor. Sigma is going to release them with Canon EF, Nikon F and Sigma SA lens mounts. When they will be on the market and what the suggested retail prices will be, has not yet been announced.
