Edge’s sidebar gains support for extensions and web apps. Microsoft is also introducing three new modes for the sidebar that should further personalize the user experience. The company published instructions allowing developers to implement the functionalities.

Microsoft goes in a blog post Check out the three new sidebar modes in Microsoft Edge. In a first mode, a default sidebar will be visible on every website. There will be content from extensions that will always remain the same, even when working in different tabs.

In a second mode, the sidebar can be activated when opening specific websites, after which a specific extension can also be loaded. The third mode makes it possible to invoke a changed sidebar with extension when certain tabs are visited.

Microsoft writes that the sidebar is as flexible as the HTML pages that are sometimes accompanied by extensions, for example to set parameters. It will also be possible to set scripts and call APIs via the sidebar. The extensions will be offered via the Microsoft Edge Add-ins page.
