Shuttle announces 43mm high barebone for Haswell chips
Shuttle has launched the DS81, a barebone that offers space for a Haswell processor with the LGA1150 socket on the motherboard. The thin housing of Shuttle’s new barebone is only 4.3 centimeters high.
Shuttle’s DS81 was already shown at Cebit, but Shuttle has now launched the barebone. The Shuttle FS81 motherboard, built around the Intel H81 Express chipset, offers an LGA1150 socket. A processor from the Haswell generation can be inserted in it, which can be a maximum of an Intel Core i7 with a TDP of 65W. A maximum of 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM can be placed in the two SO-DIMM slots, while the 2.5″ drive bay offers space for an SSD or hard disk. The motherboard also offers a full size mini PCI-e slot. , which can be used for an msata-ssd with the help of an adapter, for example, and a half-size mini-pci-e slot that can be used for installing a WiFi module, which is optionally available from the manufacturer.
Shuttle has given the DS81 compact dimensions: the 1.3kg heavy housing measures 190x165x43mm. On the front are four USB 2.0 connections, along with audio inputs, an SD card reader and an on/off switch. There are two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 connections on the back. There are also two gigabit Ethernet connections, an HDMI output and two displayport connections. There are also two RS232 ports installed.
According to Shuttle, the DS81 can drive a UHD screen. The manufacturer also states that the housing functions in environments with temperatures from 0 to 50°C, which means that the barebone would also lend itself well to all kinds of professional areas of application. Shuttle uses a suggested retail price of 179 euros for the barebone.
