Shovel Knight, the hit retro platformer from 2014, is a 3D game. The makers opted for a 3d engine because they had a better chance of being supported on all platforms and because debugging in 3d can be easier.

In the latest episode of Boundary Break, a YouTube series that takes a look behind the scenes of well-known and popular 3D games with an unlocked camera, it’s Shovel Knight’s turn. Not really a 3d game, but still. For this episode, a member of the game’s development team will also be on hand to answer questions from creator Shesez.

The Boundary Break videos provide insight into how the engines of the different games work. Beyond the limits of the player’s view, objects and environments can quickly disappear, be replaced by low-poly variants, or do unpredictable things. It’s also where developers have a ‘scrap’, and sometimes remnants of notes, mistakes or content that isn’t in the actual game.
