Sharp shows prototype of a 27-inch monitor with 8k resolution and HDR display
Sharp has exhibited a 27″ monitor at the Ceatec fair in Japan, which is equipped with an igzo panel that has a resolution of 7680×4320 pixels. The screen supports HDR display and has a refresh rate of 120Hz.
The 27″ format combined with the 8k resolution results in a pixel density of 326ppi. This means that the sharpness of the panel is equal to that of smartphones and high-end tablets. HDR reproduction requires a high maximum brightness and, according to Sharp the panel can therefore display up to a thousand nits.
The Japanese PC Watch took pictures of the prototype at the Ceatec fair and it can be concluded that eight displayport cables are used to control the screen. It is not known which displayport version that is, but to display 8k images in HDR at 120Hz, a very high bandwidth is required, of at least 120Gb/s, notes Anandtech. The latest displayport 1.4 standard provides up to 32.4Gb/s per connection.
The monitor shown is a prototype that serves as a showcase for Sharp’s igzo technology. As far as is known, the manufacturer has no concrete plans to bring the screen or a comparable monitor on the market in the short term. Earlier, Sharp already showed a 2.87 “screen with a pixel density of 1008ppi at the fair.
