Sharp sells the first 8k television for almost 120,000 euros
Sharp has launched the first 8k TV. It has never happened before that a manufacturer has released a TV with such a high resolution. The television is therefore not cheap. He must yield 16 million yen, converted almost 120,000 euros.
The television has a diagonal of 85″ and a resolution of 7640×4320. This means the display has 104 pixels per inch, much higher than many other TVs. The pixel density is about the same as a 42″ TV with 4k resolution. The number of pixels is four times higher than with 4k TVs and sixteen times higher than with a full HD version.
The brightness of the display is up to 1000 cd/m2, reports AVWatch. The image is controlled via four HDMI cables, although in the future there should be connections that can control 8k images with a cable.
It is the first 8k TV to hit the market, although several manufacturers have shown prototypes of such displays at trade shows. Sharp itself showed a prototype in January 2011. There is hardly anything to watch at full resolution, because a lot of content, such as movies and series, comes online or is broadcast at a maximum of 4k. The 8k television therefore seems primarily intended for companies.
It is unknown if manufacturers are working on 8k home televisions. Such resolutions seem superfluous in the living room and manufacturers seem to focus mainly on improving the image through, for example, HDR.
