Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Wins Game of the Year Title at Game Awards
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was named Game of the Year at the Game Awards. The game also wins the award for best action/adventure game. Multiple announcements for new games and hardware were made during the event.
The nominations were announced in November. These nominations were chosen by an international jury consisting of participants from eighty media publications. Gamers could vote for their favorite games. The votes of the public counted for ten percent.
A total of six games were nominated for the Game of the Year title. In addition to Sekiro, Death Stranding, Control, Resident Evil 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Outer Worlds qualify. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was released in March and was created by Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer From Software. The game is published by Activision. Sekiro also won the title for best action/adventure game.
The award for best action game went to Devil May Cry 5. Control took the title for best art direction while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare took home the award for best audio. Kojima Productions won the prize for best soundtrack and best game direction with Death Stranding; a new prize for creative innovation in game development. Mads Mikkelsen’s role in that same game was rewarded with a prize for best acting.
Destiny 2 takes home the award for best community support. Nintendo takes home two awards: Luigi’s Mansion wins best family game and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been voted the best fighting game. That game already came out in 2018, but was too late to be included in last year’s nominations. The title for best mobile game goes to Call of Duty: Mobile. Apex Legends wins the award for best multiplayer game.
Indie game Disco Elysium wins no fewer than four awards: best RPG, best indie game, best story and best ‘fresh indie game’. The latter is an award for indie developers who released a video game for the first time this year. Gris wins the prize for ‘Games for Impact’, an award given to a game with a social message.
Fortnite is awarded the title of best esports game and best ongoing game, while the League of Legends World Cup wins the award for best esports event. G2’s LoL team wins the “Best Esports Team” title. Danny Zorensen of Astralis has been named best coach and the Flemish Eefje Depoortere has been named best e-sports host. Several games were also announced during the Game Awards. For example, Gearbox Publishing showed a PS5 game. Riot Games also released two new League of Legends titles: Conv/rgence is an action platformer and Ruined King will be a turn-based RPG set in the League of Legends universe. The studio behind PUBG is working on prologue, but little information is known about this yet. Nintendo comes with a successor to turn-based RPG Bravely Default and an extensive No More Heroes 3 trailer. Both games will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch in 2020.
Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch will have a release period: the action game, set in feudal Japan, will be released in the summer of 2020. Microsoft also showed its upcoming console for the first time, the Xbox Series X. A game was immediately announced for this console: Senua’s Sage: Hellblade II is shown in a trailer.
