Sega postpones European release of Mega Drive Mini to October 4
Sega’s Mega Drive Mini will hit stores in Europe two weeks later than planned. According to Sega, the delay is due to “inevitable logistical challenges.” Sega announced the mini version of the Mega Drive more than a year ago.
The mini console will also be released later than planned in the Middle East. Sega calls it postponement and the reason on Twitter. In other parts of the world, the console seems to be released on September 19, as Sega announced at the end of March.
Sega announced the tiny Mega Drive in April 2018. Initially, the device was only going to be released in Japan, but a few months after the announcement, Sega decided to make it a worldwide release. The mini console comes with 42 games and two controllers for a suggested retail price of 80 euros.
Nintendo released its NES Mini in 2016 and managed to sell many copies of it. Since then, many other manufacturers with mini consoles have followed suit. Sony released the PlayStation Classic in 2018. It initially cost 100 euros, but the small PlayStation soon went on sale, presumably due to poor sales.
Konami will come with a mini console next year: the 90 euro TurboGrafx-16 mini. There will also be a ‘mini-console’ in the form of a Capcom logo featuring old arcade games from the publisher. That device will be released at the end of October for 230 euros.
