Sega Mega Drive Mini will be released worldwide in 2019
The release of the Sega Mega Drive Mini has been delayed until 2019. When announced in April, Sega said the mini console would be released this year. The developer has now decided to postpone that and to release the console worldwide.
According to an tweet Sega’s announcement of the Mega Drive Mini was well received in the west. The maker therefore wants to try to release the console worldwide on the same date. In addition, Sega wants to take the time to ‘rethink the design’. Sega will do this together with the original Mega Drive team and experienced Japanese software developers.
In April, Sega announced the arrival of the Mega Drive Mini, at the time, talk of a release this year in Japan. There were no plans for a release in the US and Europe at the time. The mini console will have games built in, but how many and which ones is not yet known.
It’s not the first time a Sega Mega Drive mini console has hit the market. The Sega Mega Drive Flashback Mini came out two years ago, but that went through a device made by another company, AtGAmes, for which Sega had licensed.
The original Sega Mega Drive was released in Japan on October 29, 1988. Two years later, the console came to Europe. The hardware is based on the Sega System 16 arcade platform. The Mega Drive contained a Motorola 68000 processor as the cpu and a Zilog Z80 coprocessor used to control the sound. More than 900 games were released for the Mega Drive between 1988 and 1997, and Sega has sold a total of 30.75 million copies.
