Security Bug in Windows 10 Can Crash Computers
University researchers have announced that Windows 10 contains a memory bug that can lead to a security risk if a computer exchanges data with an SMB server. Connecting to a rogue smb server can cause the Windows 10 client to crash.
This is what software designers at Carnegie Mellon University have revealed. This specifically concerns the SMB network protocol, which is used, among other things, for file traffic with a server and for connecting to printers in a network. As far as we know, Microsoft has not yet presented a fix for the vulnerability.
The researchers report that a denial of service can occur on both fully updated Windows 10 systems and fully updated systems running Windows 8.1. In addition to the risk of crashing and unusable computers, the bug poses a security risk. The scientists report that it is not clear whether the vulnerability provides an opportunity for attackers to go beyond a denial-of-service attack.
