Secure mail service ProtonMail comes out of beta
The secure mail service ProtonMail will be open to everyone from Thursday. Until now, the service only allowed users to access the beta, but now that it’s over, anyone can register. ProtonMail has also released apps for Android and iOS.
ProtonMail’s basic service will remain free, but the company hopes users will take the paid version to support the service and keep it running. The paid accounts are Proton’s only source of income, which, unlike other mail services, says it does not want to earn from advertisements. Simultaneously with the opening of the service, Proton released apps for Android and iOS.
The service has been in existence for two years and has a million users. The Swiss company gained more fame last year when the main character in the television series Mr. Robot uses the mail service. Proton then built a feature that appeared in the series, but did not exist yet. In November last year, the Swiss development team faced a sophisticated attack and criminals attempted to extort Proton.
ProtonMail allows users to e-mail encrypted between themselves. The mailbox does not have a password reset function for security reasons. If you have lost your password, you can no longer read your emails. When users send an email to users of another email service, they receive a link to the message. The message can only be opened with a password, which Proton hopes users will share in an equally secure way, such as via the secure chat app Signal.
