The German email service Mailbox.org is discontinuing the old Mail and Office subscriptions. Customers must therefore switch to the subscriptions that the service has offered since 2021. This may mean a price increase for some customers.

Since April 2021, Mailbox.org has only offered the Light, Standard and Premium subscriptions to new customers, but old customers could continue to use their Mail or Office subscriptions. The service announces now to stop these old subscriptions and says it will accept limited or no more payments for those old subscriptions. Customers whose subscription expires within four weeks can renew once for another three months. Subscriptions that run for more than four weeks cannot be extended.

The email service says it has to do this because of the global economic situation and the rising costs of hardware, data center energy and wages. That is why the company is discontinuing the older, sometimes cheaper subscriptions. Customers who switch can use that new subscription for free for two months or six months for free contentpass use, a German service that gives users access to certain websites without ads or tracking.

Mailbox.org offers encrypted email with, for example, PGP encryption and customers can choose their own email domain. With the old subscriptions, anonymous registrations and prepaid were possible. The new subscriptions do not allow both and annual subscriptions are required. In addition, the Light subscription of 1 euro per month no longer includes cloud storage and additional services, and the MailXL subscription costs 0.50 euros more in the new formula than before. Mailbox.org also offers office services, team email and a video calling service.
