The German e-mail service Mailbox.org is discontinuing the old Mail and Office subscriptions. Customers must therefore switch to the subscriptions that the service has been offering since 2021. This may mean a price increase for some customers.

As of April 2021, Mailbox.org only offers the Light, Standard and Premium subscriptions to new customers, but old customers could continue to use their Mail or Office subscriptions. The service now announces to stop these old subscriptions and say that it will accept limited or no more payments for those old subscriptions. Customers whose subscription expires within four weeks can extend once for another three months. Subscriptions that run for more than four weeks can no longer be extended.

The email service says it has to do this because of the global economic situation and the rising costs of hardware, data center energy and wages. That is why the company stops with the older, sometimes cheaper subscriptions. Customers who switch can use that new subscription for free for two months or six months for free content pass use, a German service that allows users to access certain websites without ads or tracking.

Mailbox.org offers encrypted e-mail with, for example, pgp encryption and customers can choose their own e-mail domain. With the old subscriptions anonymous registrations and prepaid were possible. Both are not possible with the new subscriptions and annual subscriptions are required. In addition, with the Light subscription of EUR 1 per month, cloud storage and additional services are no longer included, and the MailXL subscription costs EUR 0.50 more in the new formula than before. Mailbox.org also offers office services, team mail and a video calling service.
