Seagate to cut 1,600 jobs in months
Hard drive manufacturer Seagate is slated to cut 1,600 jobs in the coming months, about 3 percent of its total workforce. With the measure, the manufacturer wants to save 100 million dollars in costs in the long term.
The round of layoffs must be ready before September, according to a document that Seagate has completed for the US government. Because Seagate employs a total of around 52,000 people, that’s about 3 percent of the total workforce. It is unknown which departments will be hit the hardest.
It is the second round of layoffs at Seagate in a year. Last September, more than a thousand jobs were lost in an effort to cut costs. The measures would be necessary, because the maker of hard drives, among other things, has been slowing down recently, partly due to the PC market that has been in the doldrums for some time. Other than the government document, Seagate has not publicly commented on the layoff.
