Seagate has started shipping its first laptop drives with a thickness of 7mm and a storage capacity of 2TB. The disks can be used, among other things, to give thin laptops a large storage capacity.

The base model of the new generation of 2TB thin laptop drives is the Mobile HDD 2TB ST2000LM007. In addition, Seagate offers a self-encrypting drive type ST2000LM009 and a more secure drive that supports the FIPS 140-2 standard called ST2000LM010.

The drives are equipped with a SATA600 interface and have a cache of 128MB. The HDDs are made up of two 1TB platters and the manufacturer uses its shingled magnetic recording technology. According to the specifications, the average seek time is 13ms and the average consumption during activity is 1.7W and in idle mode 0.5W.

Seagate does not disclose the rotational speed, but according to Computerbase it is 5400rpm. In addition to 2TB models, new 1TB versions are also appearing in Seagate’s Mobile HDD line. The suggested retail prices are still unknown, but the 2TB basic model is now available on websites for prices between 120 and 140 euros including VAT. Competitor Western Digital currently only has a 7mm HDD with maximum storage capacity of up to 1TB in its range.
