Seagate launches new NAS HDDs with a capacity of 8TB
Seagate has released a new 8 terabyte hard drive for use in a NAS. According to Seagate, this is a hard drive with the largest storage capacity for a NAS. The hard drive will be available at the end of March.
The new hard drive is designed for enclosures with one to eight bays. In the worst case, a NAS can be expanded with eight versions of the hard disk up to 64TB. The 3.5″ drive rotates at 5,900rpm and uses 9W when in use and 7.2W when idle.
Furthermore, the drive has a maximum throughput of 216MB/s and a cache of 256MB. Seagate states in its message that the drive can be used as a file server, as storage for multimedia and for file sharing. The manufacturer also claims that companies such as QNAP and Synology have indicated that the NAS hard drive is suitable for use in their products, provided that they support 8TB HDDs.
The Seagate NAS HDD 8TB has already shipped to select customers, but wider availability won’t be until the end of March. It is unknown what the hard drive will cost.
