Seagate introduces consumer BarraCuda SSDs

Seagate has announced a new SSD line, which will be released under the BarraCuda name. These are 2.5″ SSDs with a SATA 600 interface. They will be widely available in September of this year.

Four models appear in the BarraCuda line of SSDs, with 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacity. The stated sequential read speed is up to 540MB/s and the sequential read speed is up to 520MB/s. Random reads are performed by the SSDs at a maximum of 90,000 iops.

The number of random write iops is not known, nor is it clear which controller Seagate is using for the BarraCuda line. The price of the 250GB SSD is $75, the 500GB variant costs $120 and the 1TB SSD costs $230. The suggested retail price of the 2TB model has not yet been announced. Seagate will initially only sell the BarraCudas through Amazon. They will also be available through other channels from September.

Seagate offers the BarraCuda SSDs in addition to consumer BarraCuda HDDs, and the manufacturer also offers FireCuda consumer SSDs. For the enterprise market, Seagate has Nytro SSDs.
