Seagate comes with 2TB SSD and 5TB HDD in 2.5″ format
Seagate has introduced a 2TB SSD with a 2.5″ form factor. The FireCuda drive has 8GB of flash memory and is 7mm thick and fits in laptops. The manufacturer also comes with a 5TB HDD in 2.5″ format, with a thickness of 15mm.
The new storage drives use 1TB platters, which Seagate used earlier this year in a 7mm thick 2.5″ HDD with a storage capacity of 2TB. Now Seagate also offers a FireCuda SSD with that storage capacity. Until now, SSDs have been available in 2.5″ format with a maximum capacity of 1TB.
The FireCuda SSD uses traditional platters for data storage, but has 8GB of flash memory on board. Seagate claims to use a cache algorithm that ensures that the most frequently used files are stored on the flash memory. That should speed up the operation compared to a traditional HDD. With a thickness of 7mm, the SSD is suitable for use in laptops.
Seagate is also introducing a 5TB BarraCuda HDD in 2.5″ format, but that’s a 15mm thick model that won’t fit most laptops. The small HDD can be used in compact systems or in an external enclosure for HDDs The hard drive has 128MB cache memory, a maximum write speed of 140MB/s and the platters spin at 5400rpm Seagate has not disclosed suggested retail prices and it is not known when the new drives will be available.
