Sea of Thieves is ‘playable’ on laptops with igpu
According to developer Rare, the Windows 10 version of Sea of Thieves can be played on ‘minimal hardware’, including laptops with an Iris 540 or Iris Pro 6200 GPU. Players can then expect 30fps at a resolution of 960×540 pixels.
Sea of Thieves is developer Rare’s first PC game, and the makers say they’ve been working with AMD, Nvidia and Intel for over a year to make the game playable on as many configurations as possible. There are no minimum system requirements, even on systems that do not meet the requirements, the game should run. The developers want the game to be played on a potato, proverbially.
Rare mentions laptops with integrated GPUs as the ‘lowest’ configuration. The studio specifically mentions the Iris 540 and the Iris Pro 6200. Although Sea of Thieves is playable on laptops according to the makers, it should be noted that there are few laptops with the aforementioned GPUs. The Iris Pro 6200 GPU is in the Core i7-5950HQ and Core i7-5850HQ, processors of the Broadwell generation. The Iris 540 is in the Core i7-6660U, i7-6560U, i5-6360U and i5-6260U.
Microsoft used such CPUs in its Surface Pro and Surface Book. Most laptops have CPUs with a slightly less powerful Intel HD Graphics GPU. Rare does not say whether and how the game runs on those GPUs. The developer also says nothing about the operation of the game on Ryzen Mobile processors with Vega GPU.
If you want to play the game with more graphic splendor at a higher resolution, you will have to install at least a system with a GT 1030 or R7 450 video card. Then 720p at 30fps is feasible. With a GTX 1060 or an RX 470 1080p at 60fps should be feasible. The PC version of Sea of Thieves runs on Windows 10 version 1607 or newer. According to Rare, the game will have all kinds of advanced options, such as an adjustable field of view and extensive video settings. There will also be support for ultra-widescreen resolutions and an fps counter is in play.
Sea of Thieves will be released on March 20 for Xbox One and Windows 10. It is a Play Anywhere title, so if you buy the game for one of the platforms, you can also play it on the other platform. The game will also be available immediately through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service upon release.
