Sea of Thieves has 15 million players and Steam version has been sold million times
Since its release in March 2018, 15 million players have played Sea of Thieves. At the beginning of this year, there were still 10 million. In June, 3.3 million players were active. The game has sold a million times on Steam since that month.
More people played Sea of Thieves in the first half of this year than in all of 2019, Microsoft says. June this year was the biggest month for the game to date; there were 3.3 million players active at the time. According to Microsoft, this is partly due to the release on Steam. The game has been on sale there for forty euros since the beginning of June.
Sea of Thieves was released in 2018 in the Microsoft Store and for the Xbox One. When the game came out, there was a lot of criticism for its lack of content. The game has received many expansions afterwards and was added to the Game Pass subscription, adding many players. The PC and console versions have cross-play functionality.
Users who have recently started playing the game seem to be positive about the game. This is evident from the user reviews on Steam, where the game is rated as ‘very positive’ on average. With 4.4 out of 10, the user score on Metacritic is much lower. There are often reviews of players who started the game in 2018.
Update: In June, 3.3 million players were active instead of so many new players. The article has been adapted accordingly.
