Japanese technology manufacturer Showa Denko will start shipping the first 750GB platters for 2.5″ drives in March. With the next generation, the storage density will be further increased, for 1TB per platter.

Showa Denko is currently mass-producing platters for 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives based on the sixth and seventh generation pmr technology. However, production of the eighth generation has already started and the first 750GB platters for 2.5″ HDDs will be delivered in March. The delivery will mark the arrival of thin 2.5″ drives with a storage capacity of 750GB possible, or 2.5″ HDDs with a storage capacity of 3TB when using four platters.

The Japanese manufacturer sees the step as a prelude to accelerate the development of the next generation, with a capacity of 1TB per platter. It is unknown when the delivery of 3.5″ disk platters based on the eighth pmr generation will start. These platters will have a capacity of 1.5TB, enabling, for example, 3.5″ HDDs with capacities up to 10TB. .

Showa Denko supplies platters to hard drive manufacturers such as Toshiba and Seagate. Earlier this year, Toshiba announced a 2.5″ HDD with four platters of 750GB each, for a total storage capacity of 3TB. Delivery of those HDDs will start after May.
