The municipality of Schiermonnikoog agrees to conduct test flights with drones to see if this is a useful method for delivering medicines to the island. The test would be conducted with three different drones.

The initiative comes from ANWB Medical Air Assistance, which is collaborating with UMCG Ambulancezorg. This concerns drone flights for medical purposes, including the urgent delivery of medicines. The drones would fly to and from the helicopter port.

The thirty test flights with three different drones must take place in the period from October 15 to March 31, 2018. It is not known which drones ANWB Medical Air Assistance intends to deploy. The organization still has to get permission from the province of Friesland, but the municipality of Schiermonnikoog expresses its approval. However, the municipality is against commercial flights, ‘because they disturb the peace’.

The idea of using drones for delivery to the Wadden Islands is not new. DHL is already conducting tests for this in Germany.
