SanDisk comes with new external Extreme SSDs. The Extreme Portable and Extreme Pro drives get higher transfer speeds of 1050MB / s and 2000MB / s respectively. The SSDs are available immediately, according to SanDisk.

SanDisk reports in a press release that the Extreme Portable as the Extreme Pro use an NVMe SSD. The new Extreme Pro SSD will get sequential read and write speeds of up to 2000MB / s, according to SanDisk. The SSD in question will receive a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface for this. That standard theoretically supports maximum speeds of up to 2500MB / s.

There are already some other external SSDs that support this USB standard, including the WD Black P50 shown at CES in January. Western Digital owns SanDisk. The Extreme Pro SSD also has a rubber and aluminum housing, which also functions as a heatsink. The whole has dimensions of 110.3×57.3×10.2mm.

The regular Extreme Portable in turn achieves speeds of up to 1050MB / s, while its 2018 predecessor is up to 550MB / s. That SSD uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface with maximum theoretical speeds of 10Gbit / s. The Extreme Portable has a silicone housing and therefore does not function as a heatsink. The housing is, just like the current Extreme Portable, 96.2×49.6×8.9mm.

Furthermore, the drives both support 256bit-AES encryption and both SSDs have an IP55 certification. The SSDs come with a USB-C cable and a USB-A adapter. The SanDisk Extreme Portable and SanDisk Extreme Pro will be available through ‘select retailers’. The SSDs would also become available in the Western Digital webshop, although only the previous generation of external SSDs from SanDisk is available there for the time being.

The Extreme Portable is available with 500GB and 1TB storage capacity for 150 and 240 euros respectively, ComputerBase reports. A Pro variant with 2TB will be available for 460 euros. A SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB and SanDisk Extreme Portable 2TB are expected to be released later this year.
