Western Digital, parent company of SanDisk, has improved the read speed of its 400GB microSD card so that it can now read at 160MB/s. The card carries the A2 designation for quick app launches.

The reading speed of the SanDisk Extreme uhs-I micro-SD card with storage capacity of 400GB is up to 160MB/s and the writing speed is up to 90MB/s. The 400GB variant in last year’s SanDisk Ultra line achieved read speeds of up to 100MB/s; WD never disclosed a write speed for that card.

The new card also features an A2 designation to indicate that the card achieves up to 4000 iops on random read and up to 2000 iops on random write. The designation was coined by the SD Association to indicate that memory cards are fast enough to properly run apps stored on them.

SanDisk’s previous 400GB microSD card had an A1 designation with random read and write speeds of 1500 and 500 iops respectively. That Ultra card cost 250 euros when it appeared. What the SanDisk Extreme card will cost is not yet known.
