Samsung’s smartphone sales increased thanks to Galaxy Note 10 and A deliveries
The turnover of Samsung’s smartphone division has increased by 17.4 percent compared to last year because the company supplied a relatively large number of Galaxy Note 10 and A smartphones. Samsung’s total revenue fell due to decreased revenue from memory deliveries.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy Note 10 sold better in the quarter than its predecessor last year and the company speaks of “double-digit growth” in numbers, without mentioning specific delivery figures. The Galaxy A series was also successful in the third quarter, with Samsung stating that its costs have fallen due to the simplification of the offer of its entry-level and mid-range smartphones.
For the coming quarter, Samsung expects a decline in demand for its smartphones compared to last year and lower profitability of its mobile division. The latter would be partly because the sale of the Galaxy Note 10 will decrease. Marketing costs also increase in the fourth quarter.
Samsung’s TV sales increased due to good deliveries of Qled TVs and large screen models. Here too, Samsung expects headwinds in this quarter and the company will try to sell more large TVs.
The chip division’s turnover fell by 29 percent, which, according to Samsung, was not so much due to the demand for nand, dram and socs. The memory market in particular has to deal with overcapacity and low prices. The Korean group expects a slight improvement for the fourth quarter. As far as socs are concerned, Samsung sees a rising demand for 7nm chips and camera sensors. The company has completed the tape-out of its 5nm process and is preparing to start the infrastructure for a 4nm successor.
Samsung’s quarterly profit fell sharply by 56 percent to EUR 5.93 billion, while quarterly revenue decreased by 5.3 percent to EUR 47.66 billion.
