Samsung will use Android again with its upcoming smartwatch

Samsung is working on a smartwatch that does not run on its own os Tizen, but on Android. That claims Samsung leaker Ice Universe. That would be a very unusual move for the South Korean tech giant.

Of the 36 different Samsung smartwatches in the Pricewatch, none run on Android Wear and that has been the case for a long time. If you look back, you will find that Samsung already joined forces with Google in the first years of its smartwatch product line, but that was in 2014. There are not many more examples of that collaboration.

The claim from Ice Universe is not provided with further information or a reason for the move. It may be related to the recently completed acquisition of Fitbit by Google. That company is again very big in fitness trackers, but also offers full-fledged smartwatches. Perhaps Google, strengthened by Fitbit, will give Wear OS a major update, which could be a reason for Samsung to return to the operating system.
