Samsung will release a smartphone that folds in half next year
Samsung will release a smartphone next year that can be folded in half thanks to its bendable screen. That’s according to a company spokesperson. Samsung has not yet made a decision on exactly what the product will look like.
The spokesperson for Samsung seems to hint in the interview with ZDNet that it will be a high-end smartphone and that it should be released by the end of next year. Until now, Samsung has released devices with curved screens, such as the recent Galaxy Note Edge, but no bendable screens.
A device that can be folded in half makes it possible to make a smartphone with a larger screen without the device itself being larger; however, when folded, it is probably thicker than a regular smartphone.
Samsung says it will be able to produce up to 40,000 flexible screens per month by the end of next year. In addition to Samsung, LG is also developing flexible OLED screens. Whether LG will also come with a foldable device is unknown for the time being.
