Samsung will present several smartphones with a folding screen in the near future
Samsung will present several new models with a folding screen in the near future. That is what the manufacturer says when presenting the quarterly figures. Last year, only one smartphone with a folding screen was released from Samsung: the Galaxy Fold.
Samsung says about three times in the discussion of its own quarterly figures that several folding models are coming. “Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2020, we see weak demand for smartphones and tablets. Samsung expects to increase smartphone sales through an improved product mix with the launch of new flagship models and foldable smartphones.”
A little further on we talk about folding models again. “The company plans to differentiate its most expensive smartphones by expanding 5G support and introducing new designs for foldable products.” The manufacturer is probably referring to the Galaxy Z Flip, a folding phone with a folding screen.
Samsung also made a blog post in which it explicitly references a YouTube teaser for its Unpacked event on February 11, saying it points to “the shape of things to come.” In the teaser, the A’s in Galaxy have been replaced by a square and rectangular shape. Neither shape matches the shape of current smartphones.
In 2020, Samsung’s chip division will focus on preparing 4nm and 5nm processes for future products. Thanks to rising prices, the results were better for the departments that make memory and storage. With screens, Samsung warns that a large customer is purchasing fewer displays than expected, without mentioning a name. Although Apple gets a larger turnover from its iPhone 11 models, it is unknown whether this is mainly due to the iPhone 11 with LCD or the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro models with OLED screens. Samsung only supplies the screens for the iPhone 11 Pro phones.
In the field of TVs, the company expects it to be less in the near future. The results will be lower due to the costs of investing in the ‘next generation quantum dot screens’. QLED TVs are doing well: deliveries doubled in the fourth quarter compared to a year earlier. The group’s quarterly turnover amounted to almost 60 trillion Korean won, currently about 45 billion euros. The operating profit amounted to approximately 5.5 billion euros.
