Samsung wants to release TVs with ‘qleds’ this year
Samsung has announced three QLED TVs in the context of the CES fair in Las Vegas that it wants to release this year. This concerns the Q7, Q8 and Q9 models. These are provided with quantum dots with a metal alloy, so that they should be able to display more colors.
According to Samsung, the new quantum dots ensure that the screen can offer a wider color range with more detail. As a result, a good black display must be achieved and the devices are able to display a maximum brightness between 1500 and 2000 nits. In addition to an accurate representation of the dci-p3 color space, Samsung claims that the TVs can show all colors at any brightness level. The technique can be implemented in both curved and flat devices. The South Korean company does not mention screen diagonals, resolutions or prices yet.
Contrary to what the name suggests, the qleds are not about the variant where pixels generate light themselves. The method that Samsung applies here under the name ‘qled’ is in fact the application of quantum dots in combination with an LCD, as Hardware.Info found out. Quantum dots are small crystals from two to ten nanometers that can display colors based on their size. TV manufacturers can place a thin film with the crystals in front of the backlight, which gives the screens a higher color saturation.
In addition, Samsung wants to solve the problem of cables and provides the TVs with an unobtrusive transparent cable, with which all peripherals can be connected. The company also comes with a wall bracket that allows the devices to be mounted on the wall without any space in between. Other innovations include a ‘smart’ remote control that users can use to control most peripherals, Samsung said.
