Samsung shows a PM1743 SSD for enterprise servers and data centers. This drive will have a PCIe 5.0 interface and, according to the manufacturer, will achieve sequential read speeds of up to 13GB/s. Samsung will provide samples of the PM1743 to customers and mass production will follow in early 2022.

According to Samsung PM1743 enterprise SSD achieves sequential read and write speeds of 13GB/s and 6.6GB/s, respectively. The arbitrary read and write speeds fall to 2,500,000 and 250,000 operations per second. The company speaks of an efficiency of 608MB/s per Watt. According to the manufacturer, this is an improvement of 30 percent compared to the previous generation.

Samsung previously shared a teaser of the PM1743, although it didn’t reveal any performance information at the time. The manufacturer then announced that the SSD would use Samsung’s sixth-generation TLC-NAND, consisting of 136 layers. It is not yet clear which PCIe 5.0 controller the MP1743 has, but Samsung reports that it is again a self-designed variant.

Samsung previously also mentioned a guaranteed endurance of 1 drive write per day. This means that users can completely fill the full capacity of the SSD every day during the warranty period, without causing any problems. The SSD will also receive dual port support.

The PM1743 comes in storage capacities from 1.92TB to 15.36TB. Samsung makes the drive available in 2.5″ format with a thickness of 15mm and as a 3″ SSD with Edssf E3.S form factor and a thickness of 7.5mm. E3.S is a format developed for enterprise servers and data centers. Samsung is currently delivering first samples of the PM1743 to the first customers. Mass production will start in the first quarter of 2022. Samsung previously reported that the SSD will be released in the second quarter. Around that time, Intel’s next server platform, Sapphire Rapids, will also appear. That platform will support PCIe 5.0.
