Samsung unveils NVME SSD with PCI-e 3.0 x4 interface
Samsung announced the arrival of an NVMe SSD with a PCI-e 3.0 x4 interface during its SSD Global Summit. The Non-Volatile Memory Express interface should provide higher speeds and significantly lower consumption compared to SATA models.
Samsung supplies the SSD with the type number ‘SM951’, in eM.2 and 2.5″ variants, is intended for ultrabooks and will only be supplied to manufacturers. According to AnandTech, Samsung has already supplied the SSD to OEMs, but it is The sequential read and write speeds of the drive are 1600MB/s and 1000MB/s respectively, which is two to three times faster than current SATA models for ultrabooks, according to Samsung. 100,000 in read and write respectively and the consumption in idle mode would be a relatively low 2mW.
The performance gain is due to the use of the pci-e 3.0 x4 interface in combination with nvm-express, which stands for Non-Volatile Memory Express. This standard is the successor to SATA and was made for SSDs. Nvme uses PCI Express interconnects and the controller enables significant optimizations for power management. The SM951 is not the only ssd with nvme and pci-e 3.0 x4 that Samsung showed during its SSD Global Summit. The company also comes with the SM1715: an enterprise card with a storage amount of up to 3.2TB.
In addition, Samsung comes with the 845 DC Pro series for business use. These traditional SATA SSDs use 3d v-nand and Samsung emphasizes longevity. Unlike the 850 Pro released last week, the 845 DC Pro series features first-generation 3D flash memory with 24 stacked layers instead of 32. The drives will be available in 800GB and 400GB capacities. The prices are not yet known.
