Samsung unveils new Galaxy Watch interface based on Wear OS

Samsung has shown its One UI Watch interface for smartwatches during MWC 2021. It concerns a kind of skin that should run on top of the renewed Wear OS platform from Google and Samsung. Samsung will show a new smartwatch with this OS later this summer.

The One UI Watch interface should “integrate the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy smartphones more deeply,” Samsung writes in a press release. One UI Watch will in any case be available for the upcoming Galaxy Watch generation and is based on the new smartwatch platform that the company is making together with Google. With this, the upcoming Galaxy Watch will receive support for Google apps such as Maps and Messages, and access to other smartwatch apps from the Play Store. The company does not mention support for current Galaxy Watch models.

During a presentation, Samsung shows various features for the smartwatch OS. When users install an app compatible with smartwatches on their Galaxy smartphone, it will also be automatically installed on the user’s smartwatch. The settings menu of One UI Watch is also largely the same as that of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones.

Furthermore, certain settings are synchronized between a user’s smartphone and smartwatch. For example, if users add different time zones to their phone’s clock app, these time zones are automatically added to their smartwatch, Samsung reports. And if users block a phone number on their smartwatch, this number is also automatically blocked on their smartphone. Samsung is also coming with a design tool that allows developers to create digital watch faces for One UI Watch. The battery life should also be better with the new OS and apps should start up ‘up to 30 percent faster’.

Later this year, Samsung will release a new Galaxy Watch, which will be based on the new OS. The company reports that that smartwatch will be unveiled this summer at its next Unpacked event. The tech giant does not mention a date for that presentation, but according to previous rumors it will take place in August. There have been rumors about the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4. Samsung would soon also show some new foldables.
