Samsung to produce OLED panels for laptops and monitors

Samsung Display plans to manufacture OLED panels for laptops and monitors. The manufacturer would use an inkjet technique, making the panels cheaper to produce than before.

According to the Korean ET News, Samsung has made significant progress in developing inkjet technology for OLED panels. The technology would make the production of RGB OLEDs a lot cheaper, making use for laptops and monitors within reach.

Samsung already uses RGB OLEDs for smartphones and tablets, but also for its Galaxy Book, with a 12-inch screen. The company predicted in 2008 that more than a quarter of laptops would have an OLED panel by 2015, but the production of large panels remained more expensive than expected, which prevented the adoption from taking off.

The release follows on from previous rumors from MyDrivers that Samsung will make 4k laptop panels in 13.3″, 14″ and 15.6″ and will demonstrate them at CES 2019. Samsung would negotiate with HP, Dell and Lenovo about the delivery of the screen panels.

According to ET News, Samsung is also considering using the inkjet technology for OLED panels with a quantum dot layer for televisions. In addition, the red and green OLEDs would be applied using that technique, while a different technique is used for blue OLEDs that ensures a longer life.
