Samsung teaser for ‘universal remote control’ with Tizen
Samsung will announce a universal remote control based on its own Tizen platform this week at CES electronics show. The Smart Control Remote can control set-top boxes, TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players and ‘other connected devices’, among other things.
The remote control automatically recognizes devices, making it easy to operate devices. In what way the remote would benefit from running on an operating system like Tizen is unclear. Tizen is Samsung’s own platform and runs on TVs, among other things. What the universal remote control looks like is still unknown. Samsung has not released any images.
Samsung will make its announcements at CES Tuesday, but has been providing occasional updates for weeks about what’s coming. The remote is part of Samsung’s lineup to integrate the TV into its Smart Hub platform. Samsung smart TVs will receive new software in 2016, with which users should be able to search content more easily. It is unknown if only the new TVs will get this option or if the current TVs will also get an update.
