Samsung suffers millions in damage due to chip defects
Samsung has suffered at least 1.5 million euros in damage due to defects in chips that originated in its Giheung chip factory in South Korea. The defects are said to have been caused by contamination in a production line of 8″ wafers.
Samsung confirms to Business Korea that defects have been found. The production lines are said to have been restored by now. The spokesperson reports that the group estimates the damage at billions of Korean won. One billion Korean won is converted 777,622 euros; the damage therefore amounts to at least 1.5 million euros.
The problems occurred at Samsung Foundry’s Giheung factory and were caused by pollution. Even minimal contamination can lead to defects in chip production. Samsung processes 8″ wafers here, or wafers with a diameter of 200 mm. According to the company, the factory produces chips for embedded flash, display drivers, cmos image sensors, rf, internet-of-things and fingerprint sensors. It concerns 65nm to 180nm production processes.
It is the second time this year that Samsung has faced problems with its chip production, according to Business Korea. Previously it concerned the drama production.
