Samsung has confirmed that it will stop developing proprietary microarchitectures for Exynos processors. The manufacturer has been making socs with its own M cores since 2016, but that will come to an end.

The last generation will be the M5, which ends up in the recently announced Exynos 990-soc. Samsung already had the M6 in development, but it will not come, reports Anandtech. That would work with simultaneous multithreading. It seems that Samsung is falling back on designs from ARM, such as Cortex-A77. Samsung tells Android Authority that it is taking the step to remain competitive.

Samsung has been using its own Mongoose cores since the Exynos 8890 soc that is in the Galaxy S7. With the 990, its own design has come to the fifth generation. Samsung developed the processor technology in a division in the United States. Monday earlier in the day it was already announced that the manufacturer will close it, with 290 people losing their jobs.

The South Korean manufacturer continues to work on its own GPUs. Earlier this year, Samsung announced that the company would partner with AMD to produce fuel-efficient smartphone GPUs. These GPUs should be released in 2021.
