American judges on Friday decided on appeal that Samsung still has to pay Apple an amount of 119.6 million dollars, converted approximately 107 million euros. A lower court ruled in February that the patent infringement fine should lapse.

The higher judges were of the opinion on Friday that the quashing of the fine should not have taken place, Reuters writes. There would be sufficient evidence to establish patent infringement for techniques such as contextual linking of menus to telephone numbers and email addresses, slide-to-unlock and autocomplete. The lower court allegedly used evidence that was beyond the scope of the case.

The start of the dispute dates back to 2014, when the lower court imposed the fine on Samsung. The lawsuit that led to the ruling was filed by Apple, alleging that the South Korean company had infringed five of its patents. The judge then ruled that this was indeed the case with three patents. Two years later, the fine was quashed again, because there was no patent infringement.

The judge arrived at this decision at the time by stating that two of the three patents were invalid. The third patent was valid, but there would be no violation by Samsung.
