Samsung has started production of an nvme ssd with an m2 form factor. In addition, these fast solid state drives from the SM951 series will be available on the consumer market, the Korean electronics manufacturer promises.

The SM951 nvme features the nvme interface and thus achieves significantly faster throughputs than solid state drives with sata 600 interfaces. These still achieve peak speeds of up to 600MB/s. According to Samsung, thanks to the NVME interface, the SSD can achieve sequential read and write speeds of 2260 and 1600MB/s respectively. In theory, the four 8Gbit/s PCI-e lanes can even reach speeds of up to 4GB/s. The iops count is 300,000 at random 4kB reads, according to Samsung significantly faster than the 130,000 iops achieved by the ahci version of the SM951.

The seven-gram SSD is 4mm thick and is available in capacities of 128, 256 and 512GB. Samsung uses 10nm mlc-nand-flash. There is also support for the L1.2 energy saving standard. This reduces consumption to less than 2mW, compared to 50mW in L1 standby mode.

Samsung has not yet announced prices for the SM951 NVme, while it is not yet clear when the first copies will be available. However, the manufacturer indicates that it wants to use its 3d-v-nand technology in the near future to further increase the storage capacity and speed.
