Samsung starts mass production of 3GB DDR3 memory for mobile phones at 20nm
Samsung has started mass production of 6Gb memory at 20nm for smartphones and tablets with larger screens. With four of those chips, Samsung can put faster 3GB RAM modules in mobile products, the manufacturer says.
Samsung manufactures the new memory at 20nm, while the previous generation of this memory, which is included in the Galaxy Note 3, is still made on a 20nm-class process: by that class, Samsung means that it is somewhere between 20 and 30nm , presumably at 27 or 28nm.
The manufacturer claims that the new memory is 10 percent more energy efficient than the previous generation. The 3GB memory module would also be 20 percent smaller. Samsung says the memory will make its way into larger-screen mobile products, presumably smartphones and tablets. Samsung is also already working on DDR4 memory for smartphones.
