Samsung starts mass production gddr5 at 20nm for game consoles
Samsung has started mass production of gddr5 memory modules at 20nm. These are 8Gb chips that Samsung expects to be used in laptops and game consoles, among other things.
Samsung points out that the memory can pump data at 8Gbit/s, making it up to four times faster than comparable DDR3 memory. The manufacturer makes gddr5 memory just like other memory chips at 20nm.
The gddr5 memory should end up in graphics cards for PCs, in laptops and in game consoles. It is unknown what the manufacturer means by this, but Samsung seems to be hinting that new variants of current game consoles will come, which contain that new memory. Sony and Microsoft, among others, have given the PS3 and Xbox 360 updates with new components in the past.
Samsung does not mention which customers the memory goes to. It is also unclear in which products the gddr5 memory will appear first.
