Samsung smartphones will get ufs 3.0 storage with doubling bandwidth in 2019
The first smartphones with ufs 3.0 storage will appear in the first half of next year, Samsung announces. At the same time, Samsung and Micron announced that they will release lpddr5 for smartphones in 2020.
The ufs 3.0 storage will be available next year in capacities of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. These are modules with a size of 11.5x13mm. Samsung showed a slide during Qualcomm’s 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong showing a doubling of the bandwidth from 1000MB/s to 2000MB/s. Android Central reports on the presentation of Samsung and Micron.
The Jedec organization announced ufs 3.0 early this year, citing a bandwidth of 11.6 Gbit/s per lane. According to the specification, the theoretical bandwidth is even 2900MB/s compared to 1200MB/s for the current ufs 2.1.
In 2020, lpddr5 working memory from Samsung and Micron will appear. That memory has a bandwidth of 44GB/s to 51.2GB/s, compared to, for example, 34.1GB/s for Samsung’s last-generation lpddr4x modules. Micron also announced that the company will offer 1TB storage for smartphones in 2021. In fact, smartphones can already have 1TB, but then made up of two 512GB modules instead of a single 1TB storage module.
