Samsung shows prototype of a compressible OLED screen
Samsung shows a prototype of a compressible OLED screen at the SID fair in Los Angeles. It is a 9.1″ screen that, due to its flexibility, can be rolled, bent and folded. In addition, it can be compressed, after which it returns to its original shape.
According to Samsung, the screen is suitable for various applications, including wearables and displays in cars. The company writes that the screen can be “pressed down like a rubber balloon”, after which it returns to its original state. When pressed, the original image quality should be preserved. This applies as long as the screen is not pressed further than to a depth of 12 mm, according to the South Korean manufacturer. Bendable OLED screens have been around for some time.
Samsung will also be showing other products at the fair, such as stereoscopic OLED-3D glasses and a 1.96″ LCD with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and a pixel density of 2250ppi. According to the Korea Herald, this should be used for VR, AR and holograms About the compressible screen, the manufacturer tells the newspaper that it is not yet clear when this will lead to a commercial product.
