On the eve of the CES electronics fair, Samsung has shown a new TV prototype based on microLED technology. It is a 4k model of 75″. A year ago, Samsung already showed a 146″ variant, called The Wall.

Compared to the larger version a year ago, the latest prototype has smaller pixels and the space between the pixels has also been reduced. According to Samsung, the screen is still made up of separate panels that do not have screen edges, so that different sizes and aspect ratios can be formed on the basis of these building blocks. Use is made herein of folding hooks which engage in the adjacent panel. In addition to modules with micro LEDs, it should also be possible to connect speaker panels to the whole.

In the two Wall prototypes, each subpixel consists of a small inorganic LED, which prevents the screen from burning in, according to Samsung. Because the pixels can be switched on and off separately, microLED screens have a huge contrast, just like OLED panels. In addition, the prototypes from Samsung have a significantly higher brightness than the current OLED panels from competitor LG. According to Samsung, the microLED displays can display the dci-p3 color range in its entirety.

Samsung did not announce at the presentation when the screen should be released and what it will cost, but last summer the manufacturer said that it will take at least two to five years before such a screen is on the shelves.
