Samsung has presented a new variant of its Gear VR headset with a controller. The headset is compatible with Galaxy devices from the S6 and up and supports smartphones with micro USB and USB-C. The controller will also be released separately on the market.

Samsung calls the new headset ‘Gear VR with controller’. The controller has been developed in collaboration with Oculus and is intended for one-handed operation. The controller has a touchpad, which should enable navigation within VR apps. At the bottom of the controller is a trigger, which can be used for shooting in games, for example. There is also a home and back button on the controller and it is possible to adjust the audio volume.

The new headset appears to be otherwise identical to the existing models. For example, the Gear VR has 42mm lenses and a field of view of 101 degrees. The headset can be used with smartphones that have micro-usb or usb-c. Samsung lists all versions of the Galaxy S6 and S7 as compatible. They have micro-usb, but the Galaxy S8 will probably get usb-c and the headset will also work with the new phone.

Samsung says it will soon make an SDK available via the Oculus Developer website. This allows developers to make their programs and games compatible with the new controller. The new Gear VR headset with controller will be released in the second quarter and costs 130 euros. The controller can also be purchased separately and costs 40 euros.
