Samsung unveiled its first consumer PCI-e 4.0 SSDs at CES in Las Vegas. The 980 Pro achieves read speeds of up to 6.5GB/s and is available in three variants. In the second quarter of 2020, Samsung will share more information about the SSD.

According to Samsung, the 980 Pro achieves sequential read and write speeds of 6500MB/s and 5000MB/s respectively, Anandtech writes. This is faster than most pci-e 4.0 SSDs on the market now, but this year Phison comes with a new E18 controller that should reach speeds of up to 7GB/s. In addition, Adata showed this week a Sage SSD that achieves a read speed of 7GB/s.

According to PC Watch, Samsung has upgraded its 3d v-nand for better efficiency, and is said to have made the move to 128-layer nand, where the company previously used 96-layer nand. Further specifications of the SSD are not yet known.

The 980 Pro will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB variants. The 980 Pro will be Samsung’s first m2 SSD with a PCI-e 4.0 interface for consumers. The company has not yet announced release dates and suggested retail prices, but tells Anandtech that the company will share more information in the second quarter of 2020.
